The Second Sentence: Understanding Post-Incarceration Syndrome

Wife After Prison

**Course Description** Freedom begins long before the prison gate opens. **The Second Sentence: Understanding Post-Incarceration Syndrome** is a practical course designed to help incarcerated individuals understand how long-term incarceration can shape the way they think, feel, and respond to everyday life. Many of the behaviors that create challenges after release are not personal failures—they are survival adaptations developed in a highly controlled environment. Throughout this course, you will learn what Post-Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) is, where it comes from, and how it can affect decision-making, emotions, relationships, communication, trust, and daily life after release. More importantly, you will learn practical strategies you can begin using now, while you are still incarcerated, to prepare for a healthier transition home. Each lesson includes real-world examples, reflection questions, and practical tools designed to help you recognize patterns, build self-awareness, and develop skills that support successful reentry. Whether your release date is approaching or years away, the work of preparing for your second sentence starts today. This course is also valuable for anyone who wants to better understand the psychological impact of incarceration and why returning home often requires more than housing, employment, and good intentions. By understanding the hidden effects of incarceration, you can begin preparing not just for release—but for life beyond the gate. Disclaimer: This course discusses the emotional and psychological effects of incarceration and reentry. Some topics may bring up difficult memories or feelings. Move through the course at your own pace, pause when needed, and reach out to a trusted professional or facility staff member if you feel overwhelmed. Post-Incarceration Syndrome is presented as an educational framework, not a formal diagnosis. This course is not a replacement for mental health care, diagnosis, or treatment.

I am a Walking Logo

The Starts Within Organization

I Am a Walking Logo is a powerful and inspiring documentary produced by The Starts Within Organization that shines a light on the transformative work being conducted inside adult and juvenile correctional facilities. The film follows the organization's mission of helping incarcerated individuals recognize their potential, redefine their identity, and prepare for successful reintegration into society. The title is inspired by the organization's unique logo: a single individual represented by two contrasting realities. One side depicts a person who is incarcerated, while the other side portrays a person who is free, confident, and professionally dressed in a business suit. This symbol reflects the real-life journey of the organization's founder, Carlos M. Christian. While incarcerated, Mr. Christian made a life-changing decision to abandon the mindset and behaviors that led to his imprisonment and commit himself to personal growth, accountability, and success. Through discipline, education, and a renewed purpose, he transformed his life and became living proof that change is possible. Today, he refers to himself as a "Walking Logo"—a person who embodies the transformation represented in the organization's emblem. The documentary captures Mr. Christian's work inside correctional facilities, where he encourages incarcerated individuals to use their time productively and become Walking Logos themselves. Through The Starts Within Organization, he has built trusted relationships with leaders in government, correctional institutions, and community organizations, creating opportunities to deliver impactful programming directly to those who need it most. Featuring compelling interviews and firsthand accounts, I Am a Walking Logo highlights the stories of individuals whose lives have been changed through the organization's programs. The film also showcases the collaborative efforts of judges, correctional administrators, community partners, and other stakeholders who help make this work possible. Together, their voices reveal the importance of second chances, rehabilitation, and the power of personal transformation. More than a documentary, I Am a Walking Logo is a testament to resilience, redemption, and the belief that every person has the ability to rewrite their story and become a symbol of hope for others.

Winner's Circle: Break the Cycle, Build your Future!

Winner's Circle

Winner’s Circle was built on a simple belief: your past does not define your future. This program was founded by Shelley Winner—a woman who knows firsthand what it means to fight for a second chance. After experiencing incarceration, she rebuilt her life from the ground up and went on to become the #1 sales representative for Microsoft worldwide. She didn’t get there through luck. She got there by mastering her mindset, her habits, and her daily decisions. Winner’s Circle was created so others could do the same. This course is designed specifically for people who are ready to take control of their lives—especially those who have been justice-impacted or are searching for a fresh start. It breaks down how your mind works, how patterns are formed, and how to rebuild your identity with intention. Inside, you’ll learn how to: Take ownership of your decisions and direction Replace limiting beliefs with disciplined thinking Build habits that create real, lasting change Develop the mindset needed to succeed in any environment Each lesson is practical, direct, and built for real life. No fluff. No empty motivation. Just tools you can use every day to move forward. Winner’s Circle isn’t just a course—it’s a mission. A mission to help people rebuild, grow, and step into a future they can be proud of. Because no matter where you’ve been, you still have the ability to become something greater. This is where that begins.

Love at the Center: Unitarian Universalist Theologies

Church of the Larger Fellowship

A book of essays on what it means that Unitarian Universalists have Love at the center of our faith. It is the 2026-27 Common Read for UU congregations, and is presented by the Church of the Larger Fellowship. About this book: “Given everything our world faces today, having faith in love is no small thing.” - Rev. Dr. Sofía Betancourt Unitarian Universalists as a progressive religious community hold a humbling expectation to periodically re-evaluate the freely chosen covenant that holds us together. This work gives life to the values we express. We do this work to live into the future. It is clear that the value most describe as central to their faith, to their living, and to the mission of their congregations is love itself. We are a people guided by, and centered in, our engagement with all that love requires. Our pressing task now is to ask ourselves and each other how this understanding calls us forward, individually and collectively. We may agree that love is central, but what does that mean to us and what does it require of us? It is in that spirit that we asked more than two dozen leaders in our movement the question of what it means to put love at the center of our faith. In these pages, you’ll find personal testimony to love’s power, reminders of the centrality of love throughout the long histories of Universalism and Unitarianism, and theologies of love drawn from many different expressions of Unitarian Universalism—from the natural world to the justice rally, to a loved one’s deathbed, to the quiet moment before a worship service begins. May Love at the Center serve as an invitation to deepen your own understanding and practices of love.

The Heart Can Bear It All: From Self-Hatred to True Love

Gangaji

This three-part course uses videos and readings from spiritual teacher Gangaji to take a deep dive into the core of self-hatred and unworthiness. Many people believe that deep down, in the core, they are unlovable. This course will penetrate that false belief system and reveal true self-love. Part I: The Great Discovery Inside Self-Hatred The section is designed to show you that whatever the distortions of your personality or dysfunctions of your physical, mental, or emotional life may be, the ground of your true self is consciousness, radiant in itself. It begins with an excerpt from a brief interview with Gangaji, which introduces an intimate look at how self-hatred manifested for her as a young woman. Gangaji invites you to put yourself in her place and find the radiant secret, the sublime mystery to be discovered in the core of your own self-hatred, in whatever particular form that takes for you. Part II: Liberating Unworthiness In this section, Gangaji invites you to experience this seemingly essential worthlessness all the way. Without that, you cannot know the absolute truth of who you are. We take a closer look at the anatomy of unworthiness, or as Gangaji describes it, that dark, murky energy that we secretly believe to be ourselves. Answering a series of questions, Gangaji takes us under the lies we tell ourselves to survive, into the most raw and ugly part of ourselves. The trick is not to stop there, but to penetrate that with your full attention and discover the rich secrets in the core of unworthiness. Part III: Kissing the Toad In the final section, Gangaji compares the core of self-hatred, what we most fear to be who we really are, to a particularly large and ugly species of toad. Warty and poisonous, these toads can be as large as dinner plates. To discover the secret within, Gangaji invites us to kiss this metaphorical toad.
